Yes. On your computer, open Anki and choose File > Export, then pick “Anki Deck Package (.apkg)”. Keep “Include scheduling information” and “Include media” turned on. You can also download shared decks from AnkiWeb.
Then open the file with Engrain from the share sheet or the Files app. Scheduling, media and note types come along.
No. AnkiWeb is a closed service, so Engrain doesn’t sync with it. Your collection stays on your device. You can make local backups at any time and export to .apkg or .colpkg to move your cards to Anki or another phone. Our own sync is planned.
No. Engrain costs 19.99 EUR once. AI features are included under fair use: 300 AI actions per month, at no extra cost.
Engrain has no accounts, no tracking and no ads. Your cards stay on your device. When you use an AI feature, only the content you send for that request is processed by OpenAI on our behalf to create the answer. We don’t store it. All details are in our privacy policy.
Yes. Studying, editing, statistics, import and backups work without a connection. Only the AI features need the internet.
The app is available in English and German. Your cards can be in any language, and formulas work with LaTeX.
Yes. Engrain runs on iPhone and iPad as well as Android phones and tablets, with layouts that make good use of the larger screen.
FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) is a modern, open-source scheduling algorithm. It estimates how likely you are to remember each card and schedules the next review for the moment that likelihood drops to your target, 90% by default. Compared with the classic SM-2 algorithm, you need fewer reviews for the same retention. Engrain can also personalize FSRS from your own review history.
Purchases are handled by Apple and Google, so refunds go through them: on iPhone and iPad at reportaproblem.apple.com, on Android through your order history in Google Play. If something isn’t working, write to us first. We’re happy to help.
