Guide 01

Import your Anki decks

Engrain opens .apkg files (single decks) and .colpkg files (whole collections) and keeps scheduling, review history, media and note types.

  1. On your computer, open Anki and choose File > Export.
  2. Pick “Anki Deck Package (.apkg)” for one deck, or “Anki Collection Package (.colpkg)” for everything, and choose the deck to export.
  3. Keep “Include scheduling information” and “Include media” turned on, then export.
  4. Get the file onto your phone, for example with AirDrop, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, email or a USB cable.
  5. Tap the file and choose Engrain in the share sheet. Or open Engrain, start an import and pick the file in Files.

Shared decks: download a deck from ankiweb.net/shared/decks right on your phone and open the .apkg file with Engrain. Importing the same deck again updates existing notes instead of creating duplicates.

Guide 02

Back up and restore

Your collection lives on your device. Engrain backs it up automatically every day and keeps the last 10 backups on the device.

  1. To keep a copy somewhere else, open Settings > Backups and create a backup.
  2. Share the .colpkg file to Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or your computer.
  3. To restore, open Settings > Backups and choose one of the automatic backups or a .colpkg file you saved.
  4. Confirm the restore. It replaces the collection on this device, so make a backup first if you are unsure.

Switching phones? Create a backup on the old phone, move the .colpkg file to the new one and restore it there. To use your cards in Anki on a computer, export a deck as .apkg instead.

FAQ

Common questions.

More answers on the home page.

Does Engrain sync with AnkiWeb?

No. AnkiWeb is a closed service, so Engrain doesn’t sync with it. Your collection stays on your device. You can make local backups at any time and export to .apkg or .colpkg to move your cards to Anki or another phone. Our own sync is planned.

Is there a subscription?

No. Engrain costs 19.99 EUR once. AI features are included under fair use: 300 AI actions per month, at no extra cost.

What happens with my data and the AI?

Engrain has no accounts, no tracking and no ads. Your cards stay on your device. When you use an AI feature, only the content you send for that request is processed by OpenAI on our behalf to create the answer. We don’t store it. All details are in our privacy policy.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Studying, editing, statistics, import and backups work without a connection. Only the AI features need the internet.

Which languages are supported?

The app is available in English and German. Your cards can be in any language, and formulas work with LaTeX.

Does Engrain work on iPad and tablets?

Yes. Engrain runs on iPhone and iPad as well as Android phones and tablets, with layouts that make good use of the larger screen.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple and Google, so refunds go through them: on iPhone and iPad at reportaproblem.apple.com, on Android through your order history in Google Play. If something isn’t working, write to us first. We’re happy to help.
